Grade 8 · Quick check and writing

Did the story land?

The pages after the story are the answers. Here are the words worth knowing, six questions with explanations, and two things to write.

Words worth knowing
greed
Wanting more than you need, with no reason behind the "more". Midas at the start.
consequence
What follows from a choice, whether you planned it or not. The gold bread was a consequence; so was the gold daughter.
situational irony
When the result is the opposite of what a character (or the reader) expected. The wish that made Midas rich also made him unable to eat.
hubris
Overconfidence so big it ignores a warning. The Greeks believed the gods punished it. "Yes! More than anything" is hubris in four words.
moderation
Enough, on purpose. The motto carved at the Greek temple of Delphi was "nothing in excess." Midas is the story of what happens without it.
the Midas touch
Today's idiom for someone who turns everything they try into a success. Notice that the idiom forgot the second half of the story.
Quick check
